Moral Philosophy Seminar (Monday - Week 5, MT26)

Abstract: Since the landmark Supreme Court decision in Jogee, momentum has been growing behind a campaign to make it a condition on being found guilty of a crime as an accomplice that one made a 'significant contribution' to the crime. In this talk, I'll argue that the significant contribution condition is conceptually coherent, morally justified, and practically implementable. But it would also pave the way towards a more radical - and in my view, morally preferable - reform, one which dispenses with accomplice liability entirely in favour of a very different way of criminalising those who help or encourage others to commit crimes.
