Early Career Work in Progress Seminar (Tuesday - Week 5, MT26)

Abstract: Accounts of oppression frequently emphasise that its effects on victims’ lives are multifaceted. Oppression not only limits access to vital resources and opportunities, constraining what a person can safely be or do amongst others; it also (and perhaps more perniciously) encroaches on its victims’ internal lives and self-conceptions. Subjection to oppression, philosophers have argued, can undermine a person’s sense of identity, worth, and agency, and thereby further entrench her position of subjugation and domination.

In addition, however, writers both within and beyond academic philosophy have argued that resisting oppression can help a person cast off these internal constraints and forge a sense of self of her own making. My paper examines this possibility and proposes a crucial role for responsibility practices in the self-(re)constructive process.
