The Jowett Society (Friday - Week 3, TT22)

This paper has two aims. The first is to critically examine two prominent accounts of the mechanisms underlying non-psychologically instantiated justification defeat - also known as normative defeat - championed by Sanford Goldberg (2018) and Ernest Sosa (2021). The second is constructive: it develops a novel account on which normative defeat is a matter of the proper response of our knowledge-generating cognitive processes to external triggering conditions.
