In Memoriam David Charles (1947–2026)

The Faculty was very sad to learn of the death of Emeritus Professor David Charles. David was a brilliant scholar of Aristotle and a much loved supervisor and teacher. He was appointed to a tutorial fellowship at Oriel College in 1978, and then to a Senior Research Fellowship at Oriel from 2007-14. From 2014 to 2023, he was H H Newman Professor of Philosophy and Classics at Yale. His major works include Aristotle’s Philosophy of Action (1984), Aristotle on Meaning and Essence (2000), and The Undivided Self: Aristotle and the Mind/Body Problem (2021).
